Acne is a common skin condition where the pores of your skin become blocked by hair, sebum (an oily substance), bacteria and dead skin cells. Those blockages produce blackheads, whiteheads, nodules and other types of pimples. If you have acne, know you’re not alone. It’s the most common skin condition that people experience. It’s estimated that 80% of people ages 11 to 30 will have at least a mild form of acne, and most people are affected by it at some point in their lives.
When is this recommended?
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules
- Pustules
- Fungal acne (pittosporum folliculitis)
- Nodules

What is the Procedure?
During a light chemical peel:
- Your doctor will apply a chemical solution, often containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid, using a brush, cotton ball, gauze, or sponge. The skin will start to lighten after treatment.
- While the chemical solution is on your skin, you can experience some moderate stinging.
- To remove the chemical solution from the treated area, your doctor will administer a neutralising solution or wash.
During a medium chemical peel:
- Your doctor will administer a chemical solution containing trichloroacetic acid, occasionally in conjunction with glycolic acid, using a cotton-tipped applicator or gauze. The skin will start to lighten after treatment.
- Your doctor will use cold compresses to calm the treated skin after a short while. To keep your skin cool, you could also be offered a hand-held fan. But there is no need for a neutralising agent.
- You might feel stinging and burning for up to 20 minutes.
During a deep chemical peel:
- Your heart rate will be closely watched as intravenous (IV) fluids are administered to you.
- Carbolic acid (phenol) will be applied to your skin by your doctor using a cotton-tipped applicator. Skin after treatment will start to become grey or white.
- Your doctor will do the operation in sections over the course of around 15 minutes in order to reduce your exposure to phenol. About 90 minutes may be needed for a full-face surgery.
